Bratwurst Swirls with Philly Mustard Cream Cheese
Bratwurst Swirls with Philly Mustard Cream Cheese are one of my favorite German appetizers to serve. My grandpa came from Germany where sausage with mustard are staples! Although he isn't with me anymore, he would have loved how easy it is to make these impressive savory bratwurst and onions appetizers, and grandma would have loved not making the airy puffed pastry by scratch! The star ingredient here is the smooth Philly cream cheese! It teams up with mustard and honey, the combination is a tantalizing topping that you won't forget! No wonder this appetizer carries the reputation as scrumptious! It is man enough for the men (bratwurst), yet dainty enough for the ladies (swirls). Who can resist reaching for that second one? I can’t!

  • Total time: 45 minutes

  • Servings: 12
  • 1 cooking spray
  • 1 puff pastry sheet, thawed
  • 4 5-inch full cooked bratwurst
  • 1/2 cup(s) of red onion chunks
  • 1/3 cup(s) of cup(s) of sauerkraut, divided
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 tsp. of water
  • 4 ounce(s) of ounce(s) of PHILADELPHIA cream cheese
  • 4 tbsp. of spicy brown mustard
  • 2 tbsp. of honey
  • 2 tbsp. of chopped chives
Steps
  1. Heat the oven to 400°F. Lightly coat a baking sheet with cooking spray. Unfold pastry and place on baking sheet; cover with wax paper.
  2. Place bratwursts and onions in food processor, pulse 5-10 short times or until finely diced to resemble deviled ham. Note: If you don’t have a food processor mince bratwurst and onion by hand or with a food chopper. Spread bratwurst mixture equally to the edges of pastry sheet; roll like a jellyroll. Cut 12 slices to resemble cinnamon rolls; place on baking sheet. Optional: place a teaspoon of drained sauerkraut in the middle of each swirl.
  3. Whisk egg and water in a small bowl. Brush each spiral with egg wash. Bake swirls for 22-30 minutes or until the pastries are golden brown.
  4. Meanwhile, in a small bowl mix cream cheese, mustard, and agave until smooth; set aside. Remove pastries from baking sheets, cool on wire racks for 5 minutes. Dollop the top of each swirl with Philly Mustard Cream Cheese, top with sauerkraut (optional), garnish with chives; serve warm or at room temperature.
